Granny Square Cookies!

Oh my gosh…  regular readers will know of my Granny Square addiction (hence design things like our popular Granny Square Cross Stitch Kit).. and whilst browsing the web yesterday I stumbled upon instructions for the most divine Granny Square cookies from Sugar and Meringue.

I am not the most patient cookie decorator – but I am so going to have a go at making these!  But may just find them too cute to eat.

Jacqueline Wilson Free Craft Project

Regular readers will know of my recent commission by Dame Jacqueline Wilson to create a crafty piece to coincide with the launch of her new book Sapphire Battersea.
Jacqueline Wilson is a legend – and the most borrowed author in British Libraries, selling over 25 million books in the UK alone.  Most famous perhaps for her character Tracy Beaker, she has very loyal young fans (including my daughter!).  I cannot tell you how thrilled and utterly honored I was to be asked to complete this challenge for her.
Today Jacky sent me this picture of her and the sampler at the Superfan Party for the book launch – so I thought I would share …
The sampler is in Septembers The Official Jacqueline Wilson Mag..  there are lots of events this Autumn for Jacky’s fans, including her very own festival.. so this really is a very exciting project… and you can download it for free here for a limited time only.

New Embroidered Button Project Live

Your votes are in – and you asked us to load up the EMBROIDERED BUTTONS as our latest free project on Granny Knits…  so here they are.
I have designed a mini collection of patterns which can be used on our 15mm self covered buttons – you can mix and match with self covered patterned cottons scraps.
You can super size them up if you desire – or if feeling a little bold – go freestyle, like we did with Libby’s name button.
The madder the better we feel!

Freestyle Embroidered Cushion

We found this printed cushion cover sample in our stash!  This is one of our textile designs which we havent yet put into production…   so felt it would be perfect to embellish, and upcycle!

We are in the midst of launching more embroidery patterns online on Granny Knits over the next couple of weeks – but for this project I went freestyle, following and enhancing the flower pattern, and adding in words (supplied by my daughter who said it was how it made her feel) and a swirly bird.

We used one of our new water soluble pens for this – which although it looked like bright turquoise felt tip pen – disappeared when we litterally touched it with water!

Genius!..  hope you like the design

Let there be light … DIY Lamps

Last week we got our new Lampshade making kits into stock on Granny Knits – and we have been working on some of our new craft kits as well as Pearl and Earl ranges…
… and here is a sneaky peek…
The lampshade kits contain all you need (including full instructions) to make a 30cm lamp shade, which can be used as a lamp or as a pendant shade.  All you need is a bit of fabric and some imagination!  They took me less than 30 minutes to make…  plus glue drying time for the trim.
First up is our SUPER SIZED 45cm diameter multi striped fabric lamp with a rainbow pom pom trim which now is in our hallway.  As the ceilings are so high I made it a whopping 50cm deep… It looks FAB even if we say so ourselves.
Second was one made with the standard 30cm kit – for the back of the hallway by the staircase …  a little smaller so you dont bang your head!  Trimmed with some of our vintage ric rac.

Last, but by no means least is part of our new collection of cross stitches which we are launching soon.  The light bulb was cross stitched onto a fat quarter of linen 28 evenweave, and then made up using a mini 5inch kit, some of our jumbo ric rac and plonked on a standard lamp base from our local Swedish home store.

I have to say we are very pleased with the new hallway results …  let us know what you think and how you get on with our kits…

Everything (including the fabrics) are available to buy online at Granny Knits

Pom Poms for the weekend

Pom Pom Garlands
Finished basket of goodies

We have been busy making POM POMS and YO YOs over the last couple of weeks, as we have been developing our craft classes, projects, products and Christmas ideas… for Granny Knits.

Our new Japanese POM POM MAKERS have been a joy to work with – and you can make a pom pom in less than 10 minutes – sized from a super cute 20mm to a much more robust 90mm and at less than £5 for 2 they are a MUST HAVE for your craft basket surely??
We even have a super cute Heart Pom Pom Maker ….  go on, give it a go!

Second in our new HANDI CHIC home crafts we love section – are the equally easy YO YO’s – used widely for making things from Jewellery to Baubles, Bags and Embellishment.  You simply put a scrape of material in the circle and hand sew in and out of the holes, pull and voila!  It even turns over a little seam, so no raw edges….

So why not treat yourself this weekend and upcycle some old yarn or scraps of fabric, and make some crafty chic …   a la Granny Knits, or better still sign up to one of our CRAFT CLASSES and learn some Christmas Projects first hand x

Things to do with Felt and Local Talent!

We visited our lovely friends at the Eternal Maker in Chichester at the weekend for a little inspiration.  They have some amazing ladies, who come up with some amazing things to do with scraps of fabric and felt…  who also run some great craft classes.

As we are now offering our wool felt in 45cm cut squares (so that you can make your own cushions) ..  we asked them for some ideas of what to do with the scraps and smaller bits ..  and we are loving the results!

The Bunny Egg Cosy pattern is being loaded as we speak to share with you for free …  and the ducks (with mini ducklings inside), turtle doorstop and weather watch we think are inspired…. and as for the brooches, well they are just simple and cute!

We also wanted to take a moment to share our love for local talent Lara Sparks, who teaches Machine Embroidery at the craft studio.  I am in love with her work, which is madly detailed and full of fun.  She doesn’t charge enough I feel (art works framed £50!), I just cant decide which one to buy…..
