Goodwood Revival in the Sunshine

This weekend is the annual Goodwood Revival Festival.  A celebration of vintage motorsports, yet so much more… the period authenticity Goodwood brings to the event, along with a keen eye for detail and a plethora of super stylish punters in FANTASTIC outfits, makes this one of our favourite local events.

This year seemed extra special.  We have had a great Sussex Summer – and the addition of Vintage in August, made this an opportunity to catch up with our festival friends, and seemed sadly like the last big outing of Summer.  The sun shone and the cars gleamed and the people simply sparkled.

I was honoured to meet Sir Stirling Moss – and rubbed shoulders with Billy Connolly, Eric Clapton, which was rather fabulous, plus there were a lot of Formula One drivers who I am sorry to say only Mr H got very excited about – as I have no idea who they were.  I was far too busy taking photos of people and details, and keeping an eye on my over excited 2 year old who just kept squealing with excitement at all of the noise as Spitfires flew in formation and classic cars speed past us in the pits or on the classic track.

There was a great period Tescos, complete with green shield stamps and products packaged from the 60/70′s which was inspirational.  Even the detail of the branding and the build was sublime – and we hope to see more of this on the high street at Vintage next year..

Mr Whippys in hand, we strolled round the pits, watched the cars race, had a few goes on the retro fairground, ate fish and chips, gasped at the period circus (very Ripleys complete with bearded lady) and sipped tea from the gorgeous little tea huts….  and of course shopped till we dropped in the truly gorgeous vintage clothes stores.  We have to say that simply walking through the car park is a treat – as there are some truly delicious motors, that you would love to pop out for a spin in …

If you are in 21st Century civvies you seriously look out of place!  The glamour this year seemed to have been stepped up a gear, with a lot of fur clad fourties ladies, plus fours, and military men.  There were of course the ever popular 60′s … and yes we dress up, and those that follow on twitter will know I favour a beehive, and big eyes!  Mr H thinks he is a bit of a James Dean (hmmm)

They appear to hire a few actors to intermingle with the crowd to add to the authenticity, with my faves being the Lambeth Walk Eastenders outside Tescos (who looked like Hilda Ogden) and the Dads Army old fellas, who lapped up the line of lovely ladies queuing for pictures!

It opens at the crack of dawn (7.30 I think) and so you can really cram in a great day out.

So now we are home, and tired, and giddy about how the best of this and Vintage will merge into next years festival season in Sussex.

My 2 year old whispered as he was shutting his eyes “thank you, it was the best zum zum day ever”..  bless

Vintage at Goodwood our weekend

Well we had been excited for a very long time – and after the last few testing months, we decided to bite the bullet and go enmasse to the VINTAGE AT GOODWOOD Festival – camping with 9 children from 2-13! (yes we were mad – see camp P&E with the bell tents at the top)a

We had an absolute ball – belly laughs with very good friends and all the best kind of camping…. the best thing about the festival was how family friendly they tried to be….  THANK YOU!

However, as it was its inaugral year, there were a lot of hiccups for the punters who camped – like no loos or washing facilities as promised in our area!      Overstretched staff, break in campers, general mayhem and finger pointing  and A LOT of things missing that were over promised in the plethora of emails and vast website.  It was expensive (£155 each plus £150 for camping) so that I think is why a lot of folk felt disappointed with the camping ….  The site didnt open till 11am – and everyone camping is up at 6!!  So a mess tent, washup facilities and something to do would be a great addition….  like the National Trust Area which was FAB…
… and we are proud to say that 2 of the 3 dens that were built were our kids handywork….  my husband learnt to wittle wood – and made a plethora of bow and arrows.. the kids won the binocular decorating competition and the gusto of the young crew was infectious THANK YOU!  More of these simple pleasures please.

(our dens and my sons winning binoculars!)

The people at the event made it! Despite camping we dressed to the hilt everyday – the kids threw themselves into it all, the festival goers themselves really made the festival!   Like minded souls and families – it felt such a happy place to be.

Bits to improve…  well some of the normal authenticity of Goodwood events was somewhat lacklustre – the high street simply a stretched canvas fascia over scaffolding.  More Earls Court than Authentic.. especially during the day, we felt Revival was more Vintage than Vintage!  But at night the place and lighting and music came alive!  The white marquees and scaffolding disappeared into the fantastic lighting direction and we has a ball..

When they got the music going (very late in the day for those who only do day trips) it was amazing and a life relived.  We went crazy for the Soul Casino, and the Outdoor Warehouse was inspired….  the kids grooved at the Rollerdisco (a converted Dodgems thing) and we loved The Faces, Earth Wind and Fire, Kid Creole and especially The Feeling – who had some cracking guest singers on the Main Stage.
The eye for detail in the period music tents was fabulous…  they just looked like marquees but inside they had gone to town!..  memory lane indeed..

The craft tents were fantastic and our friends at Cloth Kits did a sterling job with theirs and it was really good value…  and they even had our Granny Knits Kits with them (thanks Kay!).  There were some great girls round the corner called Seven Sisters – who offered screen printing trials for £2 which the kids all loved.

New addition suggestions from our gang..

Mr Hemmingway where was your stuff!… how cool would a mini Hyper Hyper have been showcasing new young talent… as future vintage?  The catwalks / art appeared haphazard?!  We missed the Lowes so cant include this – sorry.
The food was a bit overpriced in parts (£6 Goodwood Burger – no cheese, onions or anything just cucumber!) and we KNOW that they are normally better…  but the Torch Club dining was inspired!  and those Spanish chocolate donuts became my husbands main fodder.  We needed a family mess tent – particularly when it was pouring rain – particularly in the camping area?!

We would have loved to see a proper craft village (more more the kids loved it)… a fashion village/Kensington Market vintage village,  Home Cooking / WI style food and tent.  The car boot sale only had 4 takers as they insisted on vintage motors – quelle domage!  We only wanted the bargains …. there were no 1000 space hoppers, a Childhood revisited area would have been great for kids young and old… Plus there were no obvious 40/50/60/70/80 decade zones which I think people were expecting as that is how the web is laid out…. (we spotted the 40′s … and the music) … all food for thought.

We came away exhausted, but very happy and in a post festival ‘wish we were still there’ haze, we hope that the guys there listen to some of the feedback to help develop this true diamond in the rough to be a cracking annual fixture…  filled with more of the local talent that Sussex has to offer please, as well as the big obvious sponsors.

WELL DONE … back next year PLEASE  … just make sure there are more than 66 toilets!..  and borrow a few tea sheds from Revival!…

Anyone else go?  Let us know your thoughts….

Retro Revival Inspiration

What an inspirational afternoon at Goodwood Revival in Sussex – home to vintage cars and people in dressed up period splendor, plus it was the venue for the launch of the Vintage at Goodwood Festival for next year.  We at Pearl and Earl loved all the attentions to detail and even the recycled shed tea huts were filled with nostalgic splendor..  Fab day out to remember and very excited about the new 5 decades of cool festival for next year.  Just can’t decide which one we want to be…

Vintage at Goodwood

We at Pearl and Earl are very excited about a new festival for 2010 which is happening in our neighbourhood.  Vintage at Goodwood is the brainchild of Lord March (owner of Goodwood Estate and Mastermind behind the motoring Festival of Speed and Revival) and Wayne & Geradine Hemmingway (locals and retro design gurus!).  This will be a feast of all things nostalgic (so right up our alley) and include areas for 40′s, 50′s, 60′s 70′s and 80′s…  with current musicians singing the music that inspired them, glamping accomodation, and lots of era inspired activities.  Book out 13-15th August 2010…  Goodwood, Chichester, West Sussex (only 8 miles from our hometown of Arundel!).
