I am a little in love with these simply gorgeous Sweet Trees by Sweet Tree by Rivera as an alternative bouquet / gift to send as a little thank you…   They also make a great centrepiece for a wedding dessert bar or party.

Teamed with our Paper Decorations -they add a super nostalgic yet chic touch to any event

Nostalgic Events Launch

Well it is no surprise that “We Love a Good Do” here at Pearl and Earl.. so it was only a matter of time before we launched our own collection of things to host the most chic celebration!
Most of the celebrations in our lives have had a DIY spin on it – from the home designed wedding invitations and stationery and every kids party in between…  my approach has usually been based around a “theme” which we inevitably go to town on in our own mad cap nostalgic style!  From our pumpkin bread rolls at Halloween to the DIY paper bunting for the Royal Wedding…
Inspired by Amy Atlas the Dessert Bar Queen from NYC (see top pic).. we thought maybe there were more of you out there who loved and craved these nostalgic accessories for your event/wedding/party and wanted something “a little different”
Hey presto.. we designed, we sourced and now the first phase is here!
Starting with a collection of NOSTALGIC DECORATIONS including a plethora of honeycomb PAPER BALLS, PAPER BELLS, PAPER HEARTS, GARLANDS and STREAMERS these are exclusively designed and made by us… including our new PAPER STRAWS..
We stock 11 colours and 12 shapes and sizes – but can do bespoke designs in up to 26 pantone matched colours for wholesale, trade and catering clients…  but for now they are simply delighting us here at Pearl and Earl HQ ready for the Wedding Season and dare we say it Christmas!

Ben 10 Birthday for Baking Week

Last week my son turned 3 – and he is obsessed by Ben 10.  Filled with alien forces, baddies and lots of monsters – its pure boy! He had not even seen it – but his friends are mad on the whole thing and he was thrilled with his OMNITRIX…  a whole new learning curve for me!
Anyhow – the cakes were instructed to be Ben 10 which involved a LOT of black icing paste and dying sugar lime green!.. (my daughters idea) and seeing as it was BAKING WEEK we do love a challenge!
All a bit mad – but I have to say even the girls were thrilled with the rocket launcher OMNITRIX cake & candles and liked the sparkly mini matching cup cakes.

So for those of you who followed the “black tongue” palava on twitter (and no I am not posting a picture of that – far too surreal!) her are some pics!
Peow Peow – as Mr Finlay says!

PS – for those who asked to how to make the coloured sparkly topping – to dye granualated sugar you simply put a small amount of sugar in a plastic freezer bag and add a teeny tiny tad of dye (green and yellow for the lime!)

Birthday Sunshine in Sussex

Today was my birthday… so we had a little time out yesterday for a couple of hours to walk and talk on the lovely Sussex Downs that surround Arundel – and feed our souls with some chatter and rays.  Normally the daffs are out on my birthday – but the mad recent weather means they are still firmly underground!
We discovered some mad things on  our trek including this relic from the recent snow – which either got buried or abandoned!

After a good 10 mile jaunt, we had plenty of excuse to fill our bellies with some of the fab Sussex Fayre available at one of our local pubs.

What we were shocked at was how high the tidal River Arun was running – and we fear that any more rainfall on top of the swelling Spring tides may hit our town for the first time ever!!!    So here’s hoping for more of the sunshine and ‘rain rain go away’ (as my 2 year old puts it!).

Roll on Spring and Summer – we are seriously ready for it.

National Baking Week Recipe – our Birthday Effort!

This week is National Baking Week – so our weekend and weekly recipes will have a ‘baking theme’.  Our kids love to cook – and this week is also Mr Finlays second birthday – and he loves the classic book The Hungry Caterpillar..  so Libs thought it would be a good idea to have his party on this theme….   A design consultation and a LOT of buttercream later, and we came up with this cake of which we are very proud.!
We had lime green glitter cupcakes to match, and they both went down a storm.
Let us know what your efforts are this week.!

If you dont want to make this much effort – you can just make a quick sponge (care of my Grandma Doras recipe) in 20 minutes, its quicker than popping to the shops!

BASIC TEA VANILLA SPONGE

4oz/100g Sugar
4oz/100g Butter
4oz/100g Self Raising Flour
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 large eggs
(this makes 1 x 7inch cake tin – you can up or down accordingly)

Beat Sugar and Butter together until lighten slightly
Beat in the vanilla extract
Add the eggs one at a time and beat those in too!
Sieve and fold in the flour
The mix should be dropping consistancy
Put in a buttered cake tin (or cup cake holders) – should be about half full
Place in an oven (180o) and bake for 18-20 mins until golden – you can test the cake by lightly pressing the middle and it should bounce up again if ready….

Glaze with a 100g icing sugar mixed with a tsp water when cool, slice and enjoy

PS – our cake was made with 2 cake tins cut in half and 8 mini round cake tins – which was a 12oz (3 times) version of the above recipe)
